Day Of Goodwill

Today is no ordinary day because we get to celebrate the very important Day Of Goodwill!

What is the Day of Goodwill?

In South Africa, December 26th is a public holiday known as the Day of Goodwill. Before 1994, it was celebrated as “Boxing Day”. Though the name has changed, the traditions remain, which we will explore a bit more below. Since it is summer in South Africa, non-traditional Christmas activities (such as heading to the beach) are popular to take part in on this occasion.

When is Boxing Day (aka The Day of Goodwill)?

Typically it will be moved and celebrated on the next working day if December 26th is a Saturday or Sunday.

Traditions of Boxing Day

Many people believe the name comes from people getting rid of empty boxes after Christmas. While that is a charming notion, the tradition dates back to England in the Middle Ages, though the exact origin is debatable.

The name certainly has strong ties to the Victorian era: it was first included in the Oxford English Dictionary in the 1830s and became a bank holiday in 1871.

One theory is that it comes from the fact that servants were given their presents in boxes on this day as they returned back to work after Christmas. This tradition of giving gifts for service even extended beyond servants to other tradesmen (such as milkmen, butchers, etc.).

However you choose to celebrate this day, we hope it is spent with family and friends making cherished memories!
